Thinking About a

Vegetable Garden!

Vegetable Varieties for 2010.

PlantHummingbird Farm will participate in the Plant a Row for the Hungry Program in 2010. We are growing Davers carrots, a variety that stores well. In addition, we will donate surplus produce that is ripe on the days the pantry is open. We encourage you to plant an extra row of vegetables to donate to your local food bank or soup kitchen!

There are lots of good reasons to grow your own vegetables!

  • Tired of the high price of food?
  • Concerned about food safety?
  • Want to reduce your family's "carbon footprint"?
  • Interested in vegetables that just plain taste better?
These are all great reasons! And we can help - with seedings, tools and advice!

Here are a few thoughts to help you get started.

DO: Start Small. If you've never grown a vegetable garden before,
start with a small patch - say, 100 to 200 square feet.
DON'T: plow up the entire back yard.
DON'T: try to grow a year's worth of vegetables.
DO: Grow the vegetables you and your family like.
DON'T: Grow brussel sprouts if you hate them!
DON'T: let anyone tell you otherwise!
DO: Grow easy, high yielding vegetables!!
DON'T: Grow cauliflower, eggplant, melons or celery
unless you have some vegetable gardening experience.
These are all very challenging to grow.
