Vegetables Varieties for 2008

The Broccoli family
Plant early to avoid cabbage worms. We try to plant ours around Mother's Day, whenever Mother Nature cooperates.
Fiesta Broccoli
Diablo Brussel Sprouts
Don't harvest these until after they've been frosted for best flavor.
Cabbage
Napa Chinese Cabbage
Thinly sliced and sauteed with garlic and soy sauce, Chinese Cabbage is one of our favorite veggies!

Sweet Peppers
Green peppers are just Sweet Peppers that aren't ripe yet! Most, but not all, are red when ripe.
For best results, feed peppers with Rose Tone and mulch them to reduce weed competition.
Revolution - green, ripening red.
North Star - green, ripening red.
Jupiter - green, ripening red,
Chocolate - brown, ripening red. Turns green when cooked.
Valencia - gold, ripening orange
Mixed colors also available.

Hot Peppers
For the hottest peppers, keep the plants as hot as possible.
Black mulch and full sun are recommended.
Disclaimer: these peppers are listed in order of mildest to hottest -
Or so we're told! We can't vouch for their heat - we just grow 'em -
we don't eat the things!

Inferno - said to be as hot as Habanero, but earier to grow in the Frozen North
Thai Hot - never has one of these crossed OUR lips - but we've seen them bring strong men to tears!

Tomatoes
We grow more tomatoes than you can shake a stick at!
Some are available in very limited quantities.
Oregon Spring - the best early tomato we've found.
Gregori's Altai - A beefsteak from Siberia - claims to ripen in 67 days!
Little Lucky - Red & Yellow bi-color. Mid Season, GREAT flavor.
Jetstar - mid season, reliable, boring.
Black from Tula - Mid Season. Very dark red color.
Makes the BEST tomato sandwiches ever!
Black Zebra - Deep burgundy color. Sweet and Juicy! 3 to 4 oz. fruit.
Brandywine - Large, late heirloom beefsteak. Has won more taste tests than any other tomato. 'nuf said!
Chapman's Beefsteak - beefsteak bred here in Turner!
Reif Red Heart - Big, late, nearly seedless.
Bellstar - a large paste tomato. Means less time in the kitchen!
Cuban Yellow Grape - Tiny yellow grape tomatoes. Great for snacking right in the garden!
Sweet Olive - a terrific grape tomato. Plants will get very large!
Sprite - Grape tomatoes from a compact plant! Produces lots of tomatoes in just 60 days.
Sugar Lump - an old favorite here! Heirloom cherry tomato, fairly resistant to cracking.

Cukes
Sweet Slice - the only salad cuke worth growing! Harvest when they are 6 to 8 inches long and still slender. They aren't as good once they get chubby! Very, very crisp!
Northern Pickling - a reliable pickling cuke that has graced our table for years!

Misc Vegetables
Bright Lights Swiss Chard
Produces greens all summer in a rainbow of colors!
Leeks
Forget those high-priced supermarket leeks; gowing your own is a snap!
Lettuce
We have several kinds, plus a mix. Get a head start on summer eating with a six-pack of sets!
There's nothing prettier in the early summer than a patch of mixed-colored lettuce.
Bordeaux Spinach
Bred especailly for baby spinach - excellent in salads or on a sandwich!
Plant spinach as early as possible - by Mother's Day at the latest!
Buttercup Squash - we've grown dozens of types of winter squash and can't find anything close to this old favorite. Sweet and Dry!
And yes, we will have zucchini and summer squash...and some cantaloupe......
