A Geranium by any other name is...
A Pelargonium!
True Geraniums are actually the hardy perennial geraniums grown outdoors. "Pelargonium" is the correct name for the plants we call geraniums that we grow outdoors in the summer and (sometimes!) keep as houseplants.
Pelargoniums and geraniums belong to the same family, along with some other interesting plants, but for the last 100 years or so, scientists have seperated them into totally different genuses.
There are many kinds of Pelargoniums, from the familiar Zonal and Scented Pelargoniums to the elegant Regal Pelargoniums (a.k.a. Martha Washington geraniums) and the rare and wonderful Stellar Pelargoniums.
Pelargoniums come in many sizes, from Dwarf and Miniature to Standards that can grow several feet tall. Best of all, they come in many leaf colors! Pelargoniums with colored leaves are called Fancy Leaf Pelargoniums and are among our favorite plants! They can be green and white, yellow leafed, have bi-colored or tri-colored leaves - combine that with the huge range of flower colors and WOW! The possibilities are nearly endless.
